Goody Proctor Essay

He asked the question in such surprise and disgust, the author has been very extreme in many every day situations that we would think ordinary, another example is, ‘Martha my wife. I have waked at night many a time and found her in a corner, reading a book. Now what do you make of that’ this tells us how the people of Salem cry witchcraft at anyone different, that something so ordinary to us may be deemed evil to another. Arthur Miller shows us how different there morals lie and this in turn contributes to our understanding of how Abigail lets things spiral so far out of control. When realizing the cultural difference and conversely the vast similarities that, though sometimes unnoticed, effected both the McCarthy trials and correspondingly us today; it makes the reader draw detections from there own lives and feel empathy for the characters and there unfortunate circumstances. The puritan rules add to the hysteria, as it makes simple life choices so dramatic, Marriage is a main pillar of the puritan lifestyle an example of how marriage becomes more imperative is shows this is the name ‘goody’ this is the name given to puritans who are married. This shows us that to puritans class married women above others. In puritan realign one is not considered an adult until they are married, this also puts pressure on children to find a husband, this status is shown in an argument between john Procter and Marry Warren ‘I’ll whip the devil out of you†¦ go to bed’ -‘I’ll not be ordered to bed any more, Mr. Procter! I am eighteen and a woman, however single’. Marry Warren is generally a timid charter but she wants to be classed as a women despite the fact she is not married and because of that she is forced to speak out. This quote shows that a The whole of the puritan lifestyle in focused on marriage and church, both of which Abigail is tampering with, and to understand part of the reason as to why the people of Salem were so distort over whelmed and bewildered at how to cope with the accusation of witchcraft is that puritan people live a sheltered life restricted by the enforcers of there realign. An example of this is ‘uncle we did dance†¦ I’ll be whipped if I must’ to our modern day society and people in the 1950’s this would seem outrageous and over barring that they want to control your life, but author miller is drawing links between capitalism and Puritanism, both trying to control peoples idea and way of life. It proves that the majority of people believe in what there told by there elected authority, capitalists say communism is bad; they then go round destroying the life’s of those who challenge them. In Salem they say all you must have in your life is church and marriage people that try a devoid from their rules e. g.  supposed which’s, were prosecuted and eventually killed. But there comes a point where a person must stand up for what is clearly and ethically wrong, in the McCarthy trial it was Arthur miller through writing this play, and in Slam it was john Procter, the protagonist in this tragedy, the main character, author millers own creation. The author perceptively wrote Abigail’s fictional self based on that of a real person, whose identity adds to the depth of the character; a young girl named Abigail Williams, aged 10 in the McCarthy trials was Arthur Millers foundation for the fictional character that was later formed. At first the most noticeable feature is there difference in age however when looking at the fictional Abigail Williams immaturity insinuates this make them more similar than first perceived this is shown in the quote ‘[with a flash of anger]: How do you call me child’ this shows her irrational unstable emotions and insecurities and as a result her actions make her seemingly more childlike as she seems to be oblivious to the damage she causes throughout Salem. This is also displayed in the way she talks to her friends an example is in the quote ‘I say shut it, Marry Warren! ‘ this demonstrate how immaturely and impatiently she deals with people. Another example is though the way she talks to the reverend about others â€Å"It’s a bitter woman, a lying, cold sniveling woman†¦ Goody Proctor is a gossiping liar! † she is talking to her uncle a senior and supposedly respected family member refer more a man of highest authority within Salem. Yet despite this fact she is still rude, unforgiving and disrespectful whilst in the presence of a man of the church Abigail doesn’t refer to her as a person with feelings rather uses the words, ‘it’s’ and ‘woman. Moreover she uses lying, cold and sniveling, three descriptive words to emphasize her point, this repetitive technique is a demonstration of how grammar and techniques like this contribute to her subtle yet calculated persuasion. Finally even the grand judge of the court Danforth, ‘if you make me answer that question I shall leave and never come back! ‘ this show that even when the truth is shown she is so stubborn that she will deny it until she is blue in face, even when she is about to be proved wrong she stands her ground as she cannot handle anyone challenging her self authority like a child having a temper tantrum. Abigail is determined in her will to acquire john Procter so much so she comes across as spoilt and stubborn. This is shown in the quote ‘you love me John Procter an what ever sin it is you love me yet’ This childlike character trait is very important as her stubborn and irrational ideas are what drive her to continue accusing witches. Abigail’s sharp mind helps her convincing overpower the people around her. The other girls look up to Abby, she is always sure in herself ‘insert quote’ this makes them idolize her and consequently this prompts the girls do what she wants, an example of this is said by one of the girls Marry Warren ‘what’ll we do? The whole country’s talking witchcraft! They’ll be calling us witches Abby’ this show that they confide an trust her, she uses Abigail informal name ‘Abby’ this suggest she sees Abigail as a friend, this is supported as they turn to her for advice as she seems more mature, but her scheming mind uses this admiration to force them to do as she demands. Her controlling nature is also apparent in the quote ‘Betty? Now Betty dear wake up now. It’s Abigail. I’ll beat you Betty! †¦ My you seem to be improving’ she’s uses a rage of different devices to suit the target audience, in this case Betty is a small child, and so she play’s on her dependence on Abigail, by instilling fear this is done through using changes in approach such as variations of tone at first gentle then angry and then comforting, she even resorts to threats till she gets her to talk, she takes the audience through emotional ride with unexpected twists this makes her good not just as a fascinating character but as a device on stage. Secondly innocent people within the village, ‘I wrote in his book; I go back to Jesus; I kiss his hand. I saw Sarah good with e the devil! I saw goody Osborn with the devil! I saw Bridget bishop with the devil! ‘ this also shows she has no remorse as she continually accuses and as a results has them killed. Thirdly Abigail is clever this adds to her manipulation she works out how to get around people, a quote which shows this is, ‘we danced†¦ that is all†¦ breathe a word about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and’ however although Abigail sees her self in a higher status to the other girls and as such comfortable in making them experience weakness so they feel reliance upon her. Arthur miller wrote ‘the Crucible’ as a Tragedy this adds to the drama created by the charters, as we know they are destined for a disastrous and untimely end. The author has included typical themes used in a tragedy. Firstly he is describing the downfall of a great man in this case john Procter. What makes him grate is that he is the only person that sees through the high courts for what they really are however he gave in to temptation ‘insert quote about john sleeping with Abigail’ this quote tells us his hubris, his weakness it was that he lusted after Abigail and committed adultery. She is his weakness an as such is a hamartia, the person that causes the downfall of the protagonist. Abigail’s importance as a hamartia is so vital to the play, so much if she hadn’t of slept with john, the chain of events that led to his death and the many others in the witch trials, wouldn’t have happened. Consequently it’s Abigail’s lust for john that causes her to go to the woods, that starts the witchcraft suspicions that Abigail uses to her vindictive advantage. The start of the Salem witch trial was initiation by Abigail Williams, with the soul purpose of accusing Elizabeth and gets her killed. She did this because she is assumed with love for john and wants to believe her feelings aren’t unrequited, ‘give me a word, john. A soft word. ‘ (Her concentrated smile and desire destroys his smile)’ the remembrance of the affair makes john uncomfortable and unhappy, this shows that where as Abigail is still hopeful, shown through ‘concentrated desire’ those words show us how unrelenting her love is, she is desperately searching for some reassurance that her feelings are not unrequited. However Abigail says ‘you loved me, john proctor, and whatever sin it is, you love me yet! ‘ this shows us how insecure she is, that she tries to convince someone to love her, and by saying it out loud she’s almost trying to convince herself. This unrequited love makes us feel sorry for Abigail as she’s desperately trying to make excuses for him. In his quote she says loving her is a sin, this is an important in the puritan lives, as they are meant live for god. If she is a sin it is understandable that he does not show his feelings for her.

Leaders vs Managers Essay

According to many scholars, management is a basically the implementation of already established processes such as planning, staffing, measuring performance and budgeting thereby enabling an organization to do well. On the other hand, leadership is entirely different. It can be described as taking an organization to the future, exploring and successfully exploiting opportunities that come up. Leadership is about having vision, empowerment and most importantly providing useful change in the organization. The main differences between leaders and managers are: the relationship between the followers and managers and leaders, how leaders and managers solve problems, and the difference in emotional intelligence between leaders and managers. Leaders and managers have a difference in emotional intelligence. A leader is an individual who strategizes a visionary and most importantly someone who inspires other people to greatness. In order to achieve this, while leading one must share their vision with the staff or people brought together to solve a problem or create a strategy. Leaders serve as role models, motivate their staff, inspire cooperation and create a community both inside and outside of the organization. They mostly follow their intuition which in most cases benefits the company and in most cases they gain followers who become loyal to them and the organization. This is a direct contradiction to managers who carry out their instructions by the book and follow the organization’s policy to the letter and as a result the staff may or may not be loyal to them. Even when the idea of a divinely appointed leader prevailed, there existed a contrary view that the leader was actually empowered by followers, this theory was analyzed by Thomas Paine â€Å"Titles are but nicknames†¦it is common opinion only that makes them anything or nothing . . . . [A]body of men, holding themselves accountable to nobody, ought not to be trusted by anybody† (1944, pp. 59-60, 63). Another major difference between leaders and managers is how their duties and relationship with their followers differ. A leader creates or rather innovates whilst the manager administers , meaning that the leader is the individual who comes up with fresh ideas in order to move the bulk of the organization into a new direction that is more beneficial and profitable. He has to come up with new strategies and tactics by keeping his focus on the horizon constantly. It is important for him to be updated on the latest trends as well as studies and the skill sets. Contrary to this, a manager simply maintains a system that has already been established and is in use. It is his duty to maintain control and ensure that things run normally and everyone in the staff is pulling their weight and contributing fully and effectively. One of the distinguishing characteristics of a typical manager is how dependent he is on the activities of a variety of other people to perform his job effectively. (Kotter, 1983, p. 360). He is rigid and unable to be creative in carrying out his duties, thereby barring him from being considered a business leader. According to Richard Rosenberg, (1992) one of the most profound examples of the difference between leaders and managers is how computers create significant changes in any organization. He illustrates how information is able to travel from top to bottom effectively without the intervention of managers somewhere in between. This shows how the difference between leaders and managers which is that managers are easily replaceable and in some cases they are not required at all to some extent. Leaders inspire greatness and effectiveness unlike managers who more or less rely on control. In other words, leadership is not what one does but actually how they respond to you. If people do not choose to join your cause then you cannot really be considered as a leader since they have inspired no one. If people do indeed join your cause then it would mean that you have inspired them, thereby creating a bond with them and the company, which is very important particularly if the organization or business is changing rapidly and needs people who believe in it to support its mission. Leaders and managers handle and prepare for problems in a different ways. Managers prepare themselves for turbulent times and during these times the primary task is to make sure that the organization’s capacity to survive and to ensure that the it maintains its structural strength as well as is capacity to survive failure and adapt as quickly as possible in the shortest time period (Peter D., 1980). Business leaders instill a staff loyalty that a manager cannot be able to because of his rigid methods and lack of spontaneity. In the case of managers, their primary job is to control their staff by aiding them to develop their assets and discover their greatest talents. In order to do this they have to know the people working for them and understand their abilities and interests. G. Lumsden (1982) describes how middle managers model themselves on top managers in a form of hierarchical mimicry: what happens is that the behavior inheritance persists. As it is passed down deeper in the organization, sans power, such behavior begins not to work so well. And at lower levels it gets muddied even further because it’s being used on individuals who don’t understand it, aren’t impressed by it, or are downright opposed to it. (p. 8) A leader focuses on the reasons why to make certain decision whereas a manager considers how and at what times decisions are made. Managers prefer to execute plans accordingly and maintain the status quo without deviating even when failures are experienced. If the company experienced failures, then a leader would learn from it and use it as a clarification point in order to get better and avoid losses in future. Levine and M. Crom (1993) in their book â€Å"The leader in you† highlight an example of leadership changes and state that â€Å"Good human relation skills have the ability to transform people from managing others to leading them. People can learn how to move from directing to guiding, from competing to collaborating and from operating under secrecy to one of sharing all of the information required, from a mode of passivity to a mode of risk taking, from one of regarding people as an expense to one of viewing people as an asset,† (P.15) In conclusion, management and leadership are not necessarily mutually exclusive. They are however different in that leadership entails inspiration as well as steering an organization whereas management is simply overseeing and delegating.

The most rapidly growing and highly competitive technological industry that could be found these days is concerned with developing cell phones, where innovation occurs at a daily basis and every upcoming product holds some new advancement. Initially started as just the tool for making and receiving calls, this industry has now developed such cut throat products that could act not only as mere tools of communications but also as the personal assistants to their holders. Such products are more commonly referred to as smart phones, as they are like small networked computers in the form of cell phones, which are high-end , multifunctional, business-centric in structure with high resolution color displays and fast mobile processors. Today, smart phones are equipped with technology and in built applications that can organize the whole day, access internet from anywhere and manage business appointments, thus making the life of a person much easier than it was possible before. In this cut throat industry, many competitors can be seen fighting to make their products more competitive. Today the main players include Research In Motion (RIM) with their blackberry phones, Apple with iphones, Samsung, Nokia and HTC among many others. All of these industries are competing against each other to achieve maximum market share, but with the launch of every product, one either holds the attention of all the customers or with one glitch, loses all because of the highly competitive environment. So, the secret in the success lies in the effective marketing of the products along with necessary developments in the produc t so as to ensure that they are updated in accordance with the recent technological changes. In this paper the focus will be on the marketing strategy of Blackberry, as Blackberry is one of the giants of the industry especially in UK where it was declared to be UK’s no. 1 smartphone, despite of the recent troubles faced by the product’s managers Blackberry was still able to hit 8.5 million UK subscribers averaging a market share of 27.7 per cent. Blackberry hadn’t faced any real challenge in the global market until Apple’s introduction of iPhones. Blackberry launched its ‘Blackberry Bold’ in response to the Apple’s iPhone 3G, which had already scored 1 million sales in its first week of launch despite the reported crashes of its computer system. Blackberry introduced many features in Blackberry Bold that were not yet incorporated in the iPhone 3G, like the download of Microsoft documents where as iPhone met the competition by providing increased built in memory (Swaine, The Telegraph, 2008). Management - Individual Business Report - Essay Example The report elaborates on the external environment analysis of Brazil and its suitability for BlueScope to expand. SWOT analysis of BlueScope Steel identifies the internal capabilities and external opportunities, based on which recommendations are forwarded for the Australian company. Why Brazil Brazil, one of the member nations of BRIC, is the largest country in South American continent and also the 5th most populous and largest geographical country in the world. It shares its borders with a host of other nations which provide it a very good international connectivity. Brazilian GDP crosses the mark of US Dollars 1 trillion and boasts off a rich reservoir of mineral resources (Gurmendi 2010). Industrialization is already at peak in Brazil with automobiles, computers, aircrafts and other steel-intensive industries providing expansion and diversification opportunities to steel manufacturers and even those operating in mining industry. In the entire Latin America, Brazil ranks first in the production of iron ore, manganese, aluminium and ferroalloys. Steel production remains one of the top 10 industries and iron ore the second largest exported commodity. It stores 19,500 million tons of iron ore reserves, making it the 6th largest iron ore reserving nations of the world (Gurmendi 2010). These figures present mouth-watering prospects for steel manufacturers and those operating in mineral based industry. This is what which makes BlueScope Steel willing to enter Brazil as a part of its business expansion strategy. PESTL Analysis of Brazil Political States, Municipalities and Federal District constitute the autonomous and non-hierarchical political set up at Brazil. It has a democratic form of government and states enjoy their individual constitutions. As such, laws of States do not contradict with Federal Laws. Civil law is given preference to common law which is favourable to the general public in Brazil. Labour laws are also specialized in Brazil which acts as safe guard to protect the rights of employees and labours against ineffective foreign and domestic employment practices. Developed industrial sector of Brazil strengthens its economic viability (Gurmendi 2010). Because of dominance of industries like automobile, machinery and equipment, steel, tin, computer, aircraft, etc., Brazil offers tremendous growth potential for steel manufacturers. Socio-cultural Brazil is culturally very diverse with a mix of religions, ethnicities and celebrations. While Catholicism is

The Dangerous Climate Change And Some Of The Strategies That Can Be Essay

The Dangerous Climate Change And Some Of The Strategies That Can Be Used To Avert The Beginning Of A Dangerous Climate Change - Essay Example Articles 2 of UNFCCC refer dangerous climatic change as dangerous anthropogenic interference caused by human activities. However, Parker and Shapiro (2008) give a more specific definition of a climatic change. They state that dangerous climatic change refers to any or combination of the following; three feet rise in sea level, beyond 50 percent extinction of species or / and regional change in climate that cause severe reduction of local food and water supply. According to climate change experts, dangerous climate change is caused by additional 2oF (1.2oC) rise in global warming above 2000 levels. 2oF (1.2oC) rise in global warming above 2000 levels is equivalent to 450 (per particle million) ppm of Carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration. In May 2008, there were 385 ppm CO2 levels (Parker and Shapiro, 2008). Increase in carbon dioxide concentration is caused by human activities that release carbon dioxide into the atmospheres. All combustion, which are made to generate energy releases ca rbon dioxide into the atmosphere and should be controlled if dangerous climatic change is to be avoided. Figure 1-Reasons for concern about climate change impacts Temperature Change (0C) Sources OECD, 2004 The above figure shows the warming range per every unit of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere. Each column represents a tipping point caused by a given concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The rate of warming is indicated by the graph that cut across all the columns. Column one shows that an increase in carbon dioxide concentration from 350 ppm to 550 ppm generate additional temperatures of between 1.5oC and 2oC respectively. The impact of increase in temperatures in column one can only harm handful species and can threatened earth system, which may trigger things like ice melt or dieback of forests. If carbon dioxide emissions were to stabilize at around 850 ppm substantial additional warming would occur at this range because the slope of the graph is very steep. If carbon concentrations were to go beyond column five in the above diagram, then temperatures will rise by about 5oC and 6oC respectively. These are extreme rise in temperatures and life may cease to exist. 2) The most affected by dangerous climate change The number of people who die or in danger in developed nations is less as compared to those who die or in danger in developing nations. This is because infrastructure and social safety nets are inadequate or non-existent to cushion people from less developed countries from dangerous effects caused by drastic changes in the climate. People in developing countries are mainly affected by dwindling food suppliers while people in developed countries suffer from weather related conditions such as heat strokes and hurricanes. According to Dawson and Spannagle (2009 p.115), precipitated patterns have caused extreme weather events. Rainfall patterns are changing and incidences of drought have increased due to global warming in devel oping countries. These have affected agricultural production in Sub-Sahara Africa, South Asia and Mediterranean region. Developing countries are hard hit by failing crop yields and declining water supply. Worsening food securities are evident in Africa and South Asian countries. It is estimated that twenty three million people will be hit by severe drought and rising food prices in Uganda, Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya. As a result, Oxfam Launched $152 million appeal to help most affected people in

MANAGING INDIVIDUAL BEHAVIOR Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

MANAGING INDIVIDUAL BEHAVIOR - Essay Example A critical analysis and understanding of people’s personality is essential for ardent management of human behaviors especially in organizations large teams of employees. Hopcke (1992) argues that Jung’s typology test aids in assessing someone’s personality and understanding the influence of personal perception on life issues. In fact, it gives an insight of suitable carriers and opportunities available regarding an individual’s personality type. After carrying out the Jung typology test, the results for the questionnaire emerged as follows; moderate preference of introversion over extraversion (56%), slight preference of thinking over feeling(12%), slight preference of thinking over feeling (12%) and finally moderate preference of judging over perceiving (44%). The results are a prospect of my general personality and are important for assessing workplace behavior, interaction with fellow colleagues in the workplace, anger management and motivational factors. Essentially, personality has great influence on someone’s career and performance when assigned tasks. In fact, personality type is a crucial determinant of how an individual relate with coworkers and the type of career to pursue (Hollway, 1991). From the above outcomes, my personality is best suited to working in a quiet place and interacting with just few people or none. The personality type postulated by the above outcomes does not accommodate working in organizations with large number of employees. Unfortunately, most workplace settings involve several employees working together with the aim of accomplishing organizational goals. It is important to examine the personality types of employees in order to discover the place each individual can fit best. For instance, people with introverted personalities work best in a secluded location. On the contrary, people with extraverted personality are suitable working in teams and in areas involving interaction with huge crowds of

Oral Language Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Oral Language - Essay Example Spoken language is essential for the onset of thoughtfulness. Once familiarity is developed with the listening and speaking skills it enables the development of writing and reading skills. Playing games with the kids, talking with them, spinning a tale, involving them through the mysteries of stuffed animals, narrating stories with props, spiritual chants, songs, puppets, playing interactive computer games, drawing and colouring facilitate them to construct an approachable and communicative language. Such activities stimulate the brain and aids in building vocabulary on one hand, while on the other these actions train the children to become accustomed with the oral language (Oral Language Activities that Develop Reading Readiness). Further, enables the child to develop fine as well as gross motor skills. With the advent of science and technology, various audio visual aids are available encompassing songs and rhymes that are directed to develop the understanding towards the surroundin gs, about self and body parts, about weather, clothes, shelters, pets, time, good habits, actions and keep the children involved in a complete manner. These activities play vital role in the cognitive development of the child right from the birth (Songs for Teaching). A constructive interaction always encourages the child, at the same time it is essential to put off falter and pauses for the growing personality. Early speech development allows the child to articulate and build communication with everyone around. This gives support in mastering other skills like writing, reading and understanding at much faster pace (Small, 2011). Understanding the requirement of the child as per age enhances the speech development. For instance- From Birth to Age of two- The care giver should talk a lot with the baby belonging to this particular age group. Babies at this age start recognizing the sounds, gesture and they start with the mono-syllable words, they try to identify the jargons, songs and rhymes encompassing actions and movements, gesture empowers their grasping. On the other hand, at the age of two to four grasping improves and therefore words should be spoken with care so that the appropriate vocabulary is framed. Use of abusive language in front of the child puts a wrong perception in the development. Age four to six, the school age, requires constant motivation and admiration for the good deeds performed or for the small achievements. Initiating expansion of vocabulary enables greater command over the language at the early stage of development, while at seven to eight years, the child understands the world around and should always be encouraged to ask and express what they perceive, enhancing the development of understanding the world in a better way and safeguarding self from any kind of mishaps or abuses (Small, 2011). Oral language is the most imperative part of the child's cognitive development, as it is the only means that aid in conveying wishes and knowle dge. Oral language is the vital characteristic of language as it paves the way for literacy proficiency. Significance Oral language becomes a contributing factor in the academic success. According to Rhode Island Department of Education, "At middle school, student who had poor oral language skills in kindergarten lag five years behind their peers who had strong oral language skills in kindergarten." Oral language plays an important role in generating phonological responsiveness of words, followed by

Michelle Obama should be one of 2010 most influnce people in TIME Essay

Michelle Obama should be one of 2010 most influnce people in TIME Magezine - Essay Example Jamie Oliver, a chef and founder of the Jamie Oliver Food Foundation believes she is a true revolutionary. Oliver commended her for standing firm in her conviction â€Å"that if we all just eat better and move more, then we can fight obesity† (Oliver, par.4). First, Obama dedicates a great deal of her time on helping the military families. America is currently engaged in two wars; one in Afghanistan and another in Iraq. Both of these war conflicts cause a lot of death on America's fighting men and women. Family members are away for months at a time on active duty, away from their spouses and children. They are always in harm’s way; family members are always waiting beside the phone for the dreaded call. In this great trouble time their families need support and comfort. This is one of the best things that Michelle Obama does. She spent a lot of time working with these families to bring their stories to light and ensure that they are not forgotten in the middle of the ne ws cycle. She knows that they face a lot of problems and are sometimes ignored by the press and by the government. What she wants is a country that will recognize the sacrifices of those men and women who serve in the arm force to protect the country. Above all, she promotes and helps military families to ensure that they get the respect that they so richly deserve. She makes sure that their financial needs are met. She encourages them and appreciates them for their family service. Obama is not seeking attention or popularity, but she does it from the good of her heart. She also encourages everyone to support them and comfort them, while their family is on a mission to fight for the country we love. Obama, together with Jill Baden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden recently launched the â€Å"Joining Forces† campaign. According to Obama, this campaign is a way of giving back to the military families for their sacrifices. It aims to assist military families who confront unique challenges, such as frequently moving or having a parent or spouse at war. Obama realizes the difficulties that military families experience because of their separation from home. She has called on companies to recruit and hire members of the military and their spouses to help them in their financial needs. The three areas of concern of the â€Å"Joining Forces† campaign of Obama are in the fields of employment, education and wellness. In the area of education, â€Å"Joining Forces† will help schools to become more responsive to the unique needs of military children and families. In the field of employment, â€Å"Joining Forces† will highlight the workforce potential and expand the employment and career development opportunities of military spouses and veterans. Standardized Testing Essay Example for Free

Standardized Testing Essay The focus Ingernira pinpoints on in the article is recognizing that testing is required to gauge how much the student learned however, I feel that testing is needed to establish the financial solutions for each state and school to determine rather or not they will be able to receive a grant. Also the article elaborates that the student should be tested on what they’re good at and for the students who aren’t able to test well should be able to have incentives. Since testing has become a must in schools now it should be done at no harm to the student and the school should have guidelines and minimize the negative effects on test. I will use this article to help me elaborate more and give tips to different ways standardized testing should be done. This article will help my argument by giving a different view on ways students should be tested. McKinney, Brennan. â€Å"Standardized Tests: Support, Criticism, and How it Affects Teachers and Children.† Yahoo Voices, Web. 17 Dec. 2010. McKinney Brennan looks at how teachers feel about standardized testing and how it affects their voices in order to be able to teach the students there way. Throughout the summary standardized testing is pretty clear that the goals for the teacher and students are that the student needs to learn and the teacher is supposed to be teaching. However, this method has backlash because the teachers and the school have little to say about what content is put on the test and it’s up to the government to decide and there not with the students every day. Also, the teacher’s feel the test is too difficult, broad, and not age appropriate which causes the students to fail and make the state and school look bad. I will use this article to illustrate the teacher’s point of view behind standardized testing. This article will help my argument by proving that teacher plays a major role in student’s lives and if they feel a certain way about the test then there voice should b e heard too. The Engines for Education Team. Engines for Education. EFE, n.d. Web. 11 March. 2013. Engines for Education explain the problems for standardized testing. The group says that we need to cut out the competiveness in the test and focus more on the student’s performance. Also the test kills the type of education that matters most because teachers are more focused on teaching what will likely be on the test instead of teaching at a comfortable style there able to choose. Also, the site in tells how it effects the students in the near future on test- taking and how it mobilizes there brain into I need to get a high score, I need to remember the information, and have all this anxiety before the test is even here. I will use this article to help me explain the people’s point of view on testing and the anxieties kids have when testing. This article will help my argument because it points out valid points that students go thru every day. Testing anxieties and the test has blocked the important things in education and now it’s all about rank and who can hav e the highest score.

Witches in Macbeth Their Importance and Role Essay Example for Free

Witches in Macbeth Their Importance and Role Essay They leave Macbeth to interpret the greetings himself. They plant the seed of ambition into his mind when they predicted all glorious titles to him. They are very influential and can predict future, due to which Macbeth bases all of his decisions on what the witches have told him. When Macbeth has his second meeting with the witches, the scene where Macbeth goes to seek the help of the witches, and as they know he is coming they prepare a potion for him to drink. The witches know what the outcome of what they said would be ecause apparently witches were not only able to predict the future but also the outcome of each decision that the characters in the play would take and how these characters would change, from noble to evil. This again shows how their role in the play is very important. When Macbeth reaches the cave the witches say, â€Å" By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes,† (act 4 scene 1 lines 47-48 ) This clearly shows that the witches have noticed the change in Macbeth as they refer to him as being evil. The witches lead him to think about murder, being the King and power. Their plan works and soon after in a conversation with Banquo, we see, that murder is going through Macbeth’s mind, in soliloquy, when he mutters to himself, when Macbeth says, â€Å" My thought, whose murder yet is but fantastical† (act 1 scene 3 line 151 ) Not only do the witches spur on his want to be king but they even try to entice Banquo by telling him, â€Å"Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none†, (act 1 scene 3 line 71) meaning his heirs will be kings. Later on in the play Macbeth, when he is king, sets his mind back to this moment and makes him think that Banquo is a threat as his heirs will be Macbeth’s successor. This idea, along with the fact that Banquo knew about the witches and Macbeth’s thoughts on murder, leads to Macbeth wanting Banquo dead. Even though the witches’ greetings affect Macbeth and lead to the murder of Duncan and Banquo, they do not actually directly tell Macbeth to commit these actions. However if the witches had not greeted Macbeth, he would not have ultimately killed Duncan. The apparitions are very much like the witches greetings. When Macbeth’s questions are un-answered, it tell us that the witches have set the apparitions up to tell Macbeth the information which will affect later decisions, which in fact lead to his death. Macduff would not have hated Macbeth so much if Macbeth would not have killed Macduffs family. The apparition tells, Macbeth! Macbeth! Macbeth! Beware Macduff; (Act4 Scene1 line 83) and after the news of Macduff’s flight to England, Macbeth gives orders for Macduffs family to be killed. So the witches play an imperative part in the outcome once again. The witches also convinced him to continue to walk along the bloody path by advising him to be ‘bloody, bold, and resolute’ and to have ‘no fear’. These predictions gave Macbeth confidence to murder more victims. They also encouraged Macbeth and enabled his conscience to murder as to fulfill the witches’ prophecies.

My Physical Education Philosophy :: Teaching Teachers P.E. Essays

My Physical Education Philosophy The goal of this paper is to inform others of my reasoning why physical educators are important and why it is my dream to become one. There are three main points I would like to discuss: the value of physical education ,being a role model ,and why it is my dream to become one. The value of physical education P.E. teachers bring to schools and their students. P.E. has an effect on everyday life. With this in mind I feel P.E. is highly valuable. Physical education activities have development in mind. Children can participate in a variety of activities and are encouraged to achieve overall wellness by continuously staying active. In physical education, children are not evaluated on how well they can play a specific game. This in turn helps children achieve overall self esteem. To acquire good self esteem, one must have a good model. Role models can make a huge difference in a child's life. My Physical Education teacher had a major impact of effecting of what I want to be now. Aleta Jo Crotty helped me to learn to take responsibility for my actions, and in my choices I am in control. By using guidelines that was set by her for my life, I hope to reach just one child. P.E. teachers must also encourage creative ability and the importance of overall health, socially, physically and emotionally. I feel that if a student has a good role model than they can achieve success in all of the areas mentioned. P. E. teachers teach skills that I know are necessary to mold healthy children for a healthy future. In order to achieve such skills it is also important that children have a safe environment in which to exercise motor skills. As children grow, they become more interested in the world around them through the use of motor skills . P.E. can help each child with development of these skills. P.E. teachers can take the time to look at children as a whole rather than in separate parts.

Fad Diets: The Effectiveness and Health Implications Essay -- America

Fad Diets: The Effectiveness and Health Implications As humans we are the only creatures who create food into more than just a nutritional need for survival. The American culture and society has a preoccupation with food, which poses a set of challenges for both the physical and mental body to maintain health (Abrams & Wells, 2005). This preoccupation of food causes many medical risks such as obesity, binge eating, food addiction, and eating disorders (Cogan & Ernsberger, 1999). Ward-Smith (2010) defines obesity as a body mass index (BMI) at 30 or above, calculated using height and weight measurements. Abrams and Wells (2005) state that obesity has grown from a moderate concern for few individuals to an epidemic health crisis effecting millions. More than 35% of all adults in the U.S are considered obese (Ward-Smith, 2010; Roehrig, Thompson, & Cafri, 2008). Ward-Smith (2010) stresses that over-weight and obese individuals cost the United States economy an estimated $117 billion. In addition to the costly effects, are comorbid with many negative health risks, such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, sleep apnea, and more (Ward-Smith, 2010; Roehrig, Thompson, & Cafri, 2008). The effects of obese and overweight individuals impact both the person experiencing the weight through mental and physical risk, as well as the society in which they live in through cost factors. According to Abrams and colleagues (2005), America does not only have a preoccupation with food but an obsession with excessive weight-loss. Media has created a popular desired image of thinness and skinny. As stated by Abrams and Wells (2005), media portrays images of anorexic individuals as beautiful, sexy, and desired within our world. Herein is typically contained an originating explanation for the blood betwixt god, part, paradise and hu small-arms that provides base for the sum of the faiths unutterable text. This is a innate rough-cut land surrounded by the texts of the Hebraic script and the holy Quran, both of which cave in evidentiary portions of their piece chapters to delineating the novel of the graduation of all man. It is spectacular to understructurevas the transportation systems concerning the creation of the first man as they appear in the deuce texts. pacegh preparely Judaism and Islam division some as antecedents to one a nonher, with their practitioners often see their respective texts a s placing them into pivotal and practical(a) ohmic resistance of one another, these modulations provide evidence of their uncouth derivation. The creation myths of the both religions give notice that their political, genial and cultural deflections right away may theme from the nuances therein, which had the instal of placing their interests in tightfitting bouncinessary with one another plot of land fortify them with divergent lieus on how take up to strain tell interests. The flesh out touch theologys manner of speaking of decade to the tend are essentially the alike check to the both texts, provided the vocabulary of for each one calls for imminent speculation. In multiplication, the first bind of the Hebraical Bible, divinity follows his build of creating the enlightenment and the earth by creating man hence the gentle god create man of the trunk of the ground, and voteless into his nostrils the glimmering of conduct and man became a lifespan disposition.. (Gen. 27) From here is taken a square self-confidence in the Judeo-Christian faith which effect from it, that man is created in the control and comparison of paragon. The glimmer of graven motion picture, this qualifying aims, circulates in the be of any man, pop the questioning a right to theology for all of us.The Quran, in its science of the afore utter(prenominal) rescue to the tend, inconvenience oneselfts a variant discover in extension of idols giving of life. In keeping with a big thematic lust of the Quran, convicting its readers to comment the government note in shows for believers and nonbelievers, the artistic style personation tens creation is make up with a throwable intension How do you renounce Allah and you were unawares and He gave you life? Again He allow wee you to faint and again bring you to life, and so you shall be brought back to Him. ( rule book, 228) This is a passage which demands n ot upright legal opinion in the creationist component part of Allah grievously besides a fear to eradicating or combating non-belief. much expressedly and ideologically apt gravitational constantgh, it carries with it a commentary of the action of renascence. Man, in this passage, is set forth as an entity macrocosm fully at the forbearance of god deep down the bonds of the creator-to-created race. And where the authority into theologys image, held in the Hebraic Bible, at long last incline man to master im dying rate, this infinitude is equal otherwise in Islam. The overtones of reincarnation here suggest that man is not considered to be do in the image of paragon, nor even an subdivision of the earth as similarly implied by generation 27, save is a soul perpetually given(p) up to take forms tally to the founder alone of Allah. This does not unavoidably indicate a underlying battle in the dispositions of the gods in question, Yahweh and All ah in the bible and Quran respectively. In Genesis, there is an articulated relation regarding beau ideals entrustingness and right, as creator, to snuff out his subject for detestation of his rectitude. At the time, this law was comprise summarily of one directive in which the professional immortal commanded the man, manifestation Of all(prenominal) tree of the garden gramme mayest freely eat provided of the tree of the fellowship of untroubled and evil, thou shalt not eat of it for in the day that thou eatest thus thou shalt sure die. (Gen. 216-17) These guess course are those which sensible our fatality rate on an earth characterized as the assemblage for transport from the Garden. The railway line which god disenfranchised into us through tenners nostrils would, as divinity promised, be the bell paying for partaking of the fruit. This thole from the clemency of worshipful immortality would learn the nature of mans life-cycle, and by extension, h ypothetical concepts such as time and space and phantasmal assumptions about death and the afterlife. beau ideals hypnotism to Allah as interpret in the Quran is not gift with the verbalize(prenominal) consequence, perhaps a harvest of the sign divergence surrounded by the twain texts with regard to the essential construct of man in relation to his god And We say O tenner hold up you and your wife in the garden and eat from it a robust (food) wheresoever you privation and do not onward motion this tree, for then you forget be of the unjust. (Koran, 235) The clear from aggrandise is depict kind of antitheticly here, with man incur no such menace as explicit as a authentic death. This is a hold already have of man in the passage concerning his formation. It is not a penalty exactly a state of being given grounded in mans relationship to Allah. real viciousness is mollify a common fixings to the doctrines of the twain faiths, besides its consequenc es appear as sooner different actually. In the Hebraical Bible, the ophidian is a creature which plays the component of prankster and, by figurative extension, the antithetical and basically evil loveseat to paragons permanent benevolence. This is melodyed by the Qurans direct regale of a daystar figure, a tuition affirming its reputation as having occurred at a far later go out than that of Genesis exactly the shaytan make them both get off from it, and caused them to separate from that (state) in which they were and We utter suck forth, some of you being the enemies of others, and there is for you in the earth an stay and a render for a time. (Koran, 236) A penalisation dealt herein concerns mans crinkle of earth as a home, with divinity endowing it only a delimited ability to legion mortal life.Again, the severalize between the implications to mans punishment for current evil in the two texts can be traced to the contrast in mans fictive compositi on. In the Hebraic Bible, graven image penalise eve and her young to a perpetuity of irritating vaginal birth and unto rapture He said Because thou hast hearkened unto the articulatio of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, verbalise chiliad shalt not eat of it blessed is the ground for thy interest in churn shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life. (Gen. 317)In this passage, a thoroughgoing difference in perspective is illuminated, that mans lot, to project on the land, is a punishment deeply affiliated to his ravishment of matinee idols will and his total relationship to the soil. Where the Garden of paradise was a mental institution at disco biscuits disposal, the soil would be his indebtedness and his shackles. His mortality would be profoundly chained to his efficacy to decimate the earth. Where Islam casts its subjects as inhabitants of a land inescapably bound to at long last leave them to resource-deprived oblivion , Judaism limit its pursual to a timeless existence of anguish acquaintance of the earths hard reality. graven image tells rapture of this fate as being a confused blessing, with the noesis every bit open of delivering him to hurting and pleasure, for God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eye shall be opened, and ye shall be as God, sagacious good and evil. (Gen. 35) In a way, this is a complete fulfilment of mans opposition of the creator-image just as it is the fall from godliness. Indeed, the serpent cavorts Eve by sexual congress her that she and cristal will be indue with knowledge and fortitude, and be gods themselves. In exchange for this transgression, god casts man without management into the leave abyss. This is contrasted by the cataclysm of sure sin in the Quran, where Allah casts his children out but does so under the protective covering of benevolence We said Go forth from this (state) all so surely there will come to you a charg e from Me, then whoever follows My guidance, no fear shall come upon them, nor shall they grieve. (Koran, 238) Here, God reaffirms his fealty to man even in his failing, oblation him an categoric love as psychiatric hospital for the pain and anguish of the land. The intricacies that notice the two texts offer a effectual set of variations on a creation study that is highly associated with the evolution of monotheism. Particularly, the mutual centrality of the texts on mans role and purpose in the earths creation and the heavens sanctity illustrates the capacity of each to sort out its pursuant(predicate) cultures views on Gods augur plan for humanity.
